Google Satellites
Google satellites have put $60 million into O3b Networks, a Channel Islands startup company that is looking to give free internet services in the emerging world, especially areas that are far away from the sub-sea networks. Besides Google earth satellite maps, other investors are putting money into this effort for earth maps and satellite images.
Given how many of the previous satellite map attempts have been non-starters, either for economic reasons or simple technology issues the claims by this company are quite stunning. Here are some facts:
* A strictly wholesale service that will sell bandwidth to local ISPs, fixed-line and mobile providers.
* The company is also going to offer Google Apps, like Google Earth and Google Maps to its potential customers.
* They claim speeds of up to 10 Gbps and low latency as O3b Networks uses parabolic antennas, which reduce latency.
* Their satellite photo birds, all 16 of them, are going to be positioned at 8,063 kms from the Earth, which allows them to add new satellite view and earth pictures easier.
* The coverage zone is between +/- 40 degrees of latitude.
In theory, this satellite maps company backed by Google earth maps could make great strides in providing internet and satellite earth views as we look toward the next decade. Interesting to say the least.
